World Leaders and politicians thrive on the short attention
span of the public. People these days focus on something only when it’s
trending on twitter. Though It is not
entirely our fault in the current circumstances, when we are being pelted with
issues almost on a never-ending basis, it really is difficult to concentrate on
anything else when one does not know whether they will be having their next
meal or not. Unfortunately, the deadly pandemic that we currently face has made
it difficult to think about anything else.
However as World Environment Day approaches us soon, busy
governments all over the world- who are investing so much in saving lives and
salvaging the trodden economy should also look into ways of saving our future,
because pandemics like the Coronaviruses have high chances of becoming regular
occurrences in the coming time- unless something monumental is done to undo the damage we have
done to our planet.
And
what better time to do so, than now, when the earth has already started healing
itself, while humanity stays at home. Fixing this irreparable damage is the
the only thing that matters in the long run. Right before the pandemic, the air
that we were breathing was shortening our lifespans - cities like Beijing and
Delhi was being choked by industrial pollution, forest fires in Indonesia and
the Amazon rain forests, the recent bushfires in Australia, Unprecedented
droughts in California, Crops being washed away by heavy floods in India, the
ancient glaciers rapidly melting in Greenland and the Arctic, several animals
species becoming extinct - all because mankind has been pretending for decades
now that climate change is not real.
Environmental scientists all over the world have been warning us that
this is all the result of careless human activities and exploitation of the
planet. These past 20 years we have been accelerating towards our end, towards a day when the earth will finally hurt us back. 2019 was a year when many of us became aware and we saw millions on the streets all over the world protesting, for the government to pass laws to protect our bleak-looking future. This is not the time to give dishonest speeches in the parliament, or banging tables and walking out, it is time to admit that we need help and finally start listening to the community of scientists, who've been looking for ways to save
us.
After almost a month of staying at home, the one thing I have realized that it is okay to buy one dress instead of five, have one family car instead of everyone having their own vehicles, eat less and healthy - because this is what is good for us now and later, less is more, so why don't we stop being a race of greedy humans, always on the lookout for more than what we need, to at least tell our future generations that we tried.
